Srinagar, December 08:
Thousands of mourners in Kashmir braved the morning cold to attend the funeral of militant who was killed in a brief gunfight with government forces on Tuesday.
People in Sopore town of north Kashmir thronged to the residence of Shakir Showkat Bhat, who along with a Pakistan militant, was killed in a gunfight on the Kashmir highway in Pampore township.
Shakir had been arrested along with a top Lashkar-e-Toiba militant, Fahadullah, in 2013, but had joined the militant group again this year in October.
Security forces say the duo was on their way to region’s summer capital Srinagar when the gunfight broke out.
Witnesses, who were part of Shakir’s funeral, say at least four to five thousand mourners chanting pro-freedom and anti-India slogans attended his funeral.
He was buried at a graveyard in Nowpora village close to the apple town, some 55 kms from here.
